Nestled back from the street, surrounded by trees, our home is located at 296 Snowbird Loop near the crest of the horseshoe of the loop. Upon arrival, you’ll find a paved driveway with the house of nearly floor to ceiling windows on the front facade allowing lots of light and afternoon sun into the great room. The side porch basks in the morning sun, a lovely spot to enjoy the quiet at dawn. There is a small foot path to the left of the home which brings you out to Chamberland Drive & Lark Drive – a shortcut if you’re walking to the beach or simply around Chambers among the classic A-frame homes.
Our home is located on the West Shore in Chamberlands, the small community of homes across the road from Chambers Landing. Chambers Landing was started by John Washington McKinney, a genuine mountain man, when he founded Hunter’s Retreat here in 1863, claimed to be the finest hunting and fishing camp in the Sierra Nevada. The part of Lake Tahoe by Homewood and Tahoma is called McKinney Bay. By 1869, McKinney had created a resort with 20 cabins and a number of tents. The present Chambers bar was built in 1875 – the first boathouse on Tahoe.In 1920, David Henry Chambers purchased McKinney’s resort and renamed it Chambers Lodge. The Lodge is now the restaurant and pool without any lodging, but rather a white sand beach with a pier and a famous bar on the Lake. No matter the season, this is a magical place to visit, relax and breathe the fresh mountain air, be it in solitude, or with family and friends. It’s no wonder our folks, Fran & John Strain, spent much of our family vacations and their retirement here in this most tranquil setting creating memories for generations.
